The First Art Releases From Mondo's Mutant Showcase Vampires and Madness by Germain Lussier

by Germain Lussier 30 Jan 2024

Did you hear the big news? The team behind the once ultra-popular pop culture company Mondo has formed a brand new company called Mutant. Now under the umbrella of Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision, Mutant will pick up where Mondo left off after being completely decimated by Funko.

Alex Winter on the Most Important Modern Horror Movie

So how does that start? Well, io9 has the answer with the exclusive reveal of Mutant’s first two limited edition posters, which instantly show the scope of what this new iteration is capable of. First is Mutant’s first alternate movie poster, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night by Nicolas Delort.

The 2014 Iranian vampire movie by Ana Lily Amirpour was one of SpecteVision’s first films so the synergy makes sense. “Our goal has always been to champion the things we love,” Mutant creative director Eric Garza told io9. “Genre film is in our DNA, and we thought this was a great opportunity to revisit the 10th anniversary of one of the most original horror films of the last decade.” Here’s the poster.

The piece is a 24 x 18 inch screenprint in an edition of 215 and will cost $50. It’ll be available starting at 10 a.m. CST on January 31 at madebymutant.com.

The other release is about as un-Mondo as you can get, in the best possible way. Mutant is also releasing a non-pop culture, but still quite beautiful, art piece by the incredibly talented artist Aaron Horkey called Glochidia.

“[For our first release] it was important for us to show that everything is on the table with Mutant, and so we have Glochidia’ by Aaron Horkey—a brain-breakingly gorgeous new fine art print,” Garza said. “Largely our output will exist in the film and pop culture space, but we’re not limiting ourselves to that. We have a unique privilege and opportunity to work with world-class artists and a platform to get their work in front of an audience who love art. We don’t take that responsibility lightly.” Here’s the piece.

This weird, colorful creature thing comes as a 9 x 14.5 inch archival giclée print featuring “intricately sculpted embossing and foil-stamped detailing.” It costs $150 and will be available as a timed edition from 10 a.m. CST on February through noon CST on February 5 at 12 p.m. CST, also on madebymutant.com.

“We are so excited to work with Aaron Horkey on one of his most ambitious prints yet,” fellow creative director Mitch Putnam said told io9. “The detail, craftsmanship, and sheer ‘Wow factor’ is off the charts on this one. Print collectors have to see this thing in person, it will blow you away.” Here’s a close-up.

Now, for some fans of old-school Mondo, there’s certainly a chance you look at these two pieces—a black-and-white indie genre film and an art piece—and think, “Is Mutant going to just be this? Is it done doing mainstream properties?” Well, no. It has work coming from Dune: Part Two, for example, and Garza explained it’s all about the balance. “Our mission in curation has always been to celebrate both the served and the underserved corners of pop culture,” he said. “The tentpole and legacy films are amazing, but we’re just as excited about producing work for films and filmmakers whose work might exist outside of someone’s regular purview. In some cases, these posters and records might be the only way that fans of these films can have something on their wall or turntable, and that’s important to us.”
